What is a Water Sommelier?

Many people are familiar with the profession of Wine Sommelier. However, when I tell people that I’m a Water Sommelier, I often receive reactions like: "A Water Sommelier? I’ve never heard of that before.” "What does a Water Sommelier actually do?"

Since these are common questions, I’d like to share some insights into what Water Sommeliers do and why water is a much more fascinating topic than many people initially think.

A profession many are still unfamiliar with

Training to become a Water Sommelier has been available for years. Nevertheless, it remains a true niche to this day. There are only a few hundred certified Water Sommeliers worldwide. People pursue this certification for a variety of reasons. Some work in sales or quality departments at mineral water companies and want to expand their knowledge of mineral water. Others work in the hospitality industry, such as in restaurants or hotels, where they focus on pairing water with meals. Some host tastings, consult for companies, or share their knowledge of water at specialty beverage stores, lectures, workshops, and on social media.

Why water deserves more attention

Water is the most consumed beverage in the world, and it is also the most important for our bodies. Yet many people give little thought to what they drink every day.

As a Water Sommelier, I am on a mission to introduce people to the diversity and unique characteristics of mineral water. Every water has its own DNA, with different minerals, regions of origin, and natural carbonation ensuring that mineral water can taste very different. Ranging from soft and mild to mineral-rich and complex.

I want to inspire people to appreciate water and show them that it can be so much more than an everyday beverage. It can offer flavor, variety, and even an experience. Often, after a single tasting, someone will say, "I never would have thought water could taste so different."

1. Water Tastings

Water tastings are a particularly exciting part of my job. Many people are surprised when they taste different mineral waters side by side for the first time. During a tasting, participants learn, for example:

  • What types of water exist and how they differ

  • How to properly taste water

  • How minerals affect the taste

  • What role minerals can play in our bodies

  • Which water they personally like best

Such tastings help people become more aware of water and discover their preferences.

2. Water Bars and Water Menus

In addition to tastings, I work with restaurants, hotels, and event organizers to design one-of-a-kind water experiences. These include:

  • Water bars, where guests can discover various international mineral waters during an event;

  • Water menus function like wine lists, pairing different waters with dishes. In this way, water can become an essential part of the culinary experience.

3. #AWESOMM Tasting Boxes

The #AWESOMM Tasting Box gives people the chance to discover the world of mineral waters from home. The box contains six different mineral waters from various regions. Through an online tasting, participants can learn:

  • What to look for during the tasting

  • How minerals affect the taste

  • Which water becomes their personal favorite

  • And much more!

This box is perfect for individuals, families, or groups of friends who want to share a unique tasting experience.

4. Tom Tropfen: Mineral water for kids

One project that is particularly close to my heart is Tom Tropfen.

It’s an initiative designed to encourage children to drink water regularly. The idea is simple: If children learn early on to view water positively, they will likely develop healthy drinking habits that last a lifetime. The mineral water comes with a coloring book that teaches the benefits of drinking water.

5. Education on Social Media

I regularly share information about mineral water through my social media channels with a steadily growing community. The information is simple, easy to understand, and interesting. Among other things, I discuss:

  • Exciting mineral waters from around the world

  • Differences between various types of water

  • Minerals in water

  • Water tastings

  • Tips on staying hydrated

6. An Online Store for Mineral Water

At the end of last year, I moved to Dubai with my family. There, I started again as a Water Sommelier. In addition to the tastings and projects mentioned, I am working on an online store for unique mineral waters. My goal is to provide people in the United Arab Emirates with access to high-quality mineral waters from various regions worldwide.

Whether for everyday enjoyment, special occasions, or tastings at home, the shop offers a selection of waters that can be delivered directly to your doorstep.

Feel free to take a closer look at what I have to offer.

With that said: Drink water, #stayhydrated

Best regards

About Timo Bausch

My fascination with mineral waters began in 2016 during my training as a Water Sommelier. Since then, I have been exploring the characteristics and diversity of water. In addition to pairing water with food, wine, coffee and other beverages, I offer the creation of water menus for restaurants and hotels. Furthermore, it is also important to me to draw attention to the importance of drinking water.
