Is drinking distilled water a trend or a myth? 🌡

An increasing number of social media posts are celebrating distilled water as particularly 'pure' or even 'detoxifying'. But what is really behind this trend, and is it healthy?

What is distilled water?
It is water that has been produced by evaporation and subsequent condensation, a process that removes almost all dissolved substances. These substances include minerals, impurities, salts and microorganisms. What remains is almost pure H₂O. It is often used as a solvent and cleaning agent in medicine, pharmacy, chemistry and biology.
The catch is that no water is just H₂O
Drinking water always contains minerals in its natural form. This applies to tap water, mineral water and healing water. These minerals not only affect the taste, but are also vital for the body. Drinking distilled water lacks precisely these minerals. Even worse, distilled water seeks out minerals in the body, which can lead to electrolytes being flushed out.
The possible risks of regularly consuming distilled water:
Increased loss of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium.
Electrolyte disorders, whereby important minerals and trace elements are not transported properly.
Changes in the pH balance.
We often read that we absorb minerals through our food. Some people therefore claim that there are probably no acute health risks associated with drinking distilled water. That may be true. However, in my opinion, natural mineral waters are also an important supplementary source of minerals. This is especially important if you have an imbalanced diet or during periods of increased stress, such as during hot weather, exercise or illness. Pregnant women, children, and people suffering from diarrhoea should also avoid distilled water.
Conclusion:
Distilled water may be chemically pure. But that is precisely the problem. It contains no minerals, which our bodies urgently need. If you regularly drink distilled water, you risk disrupting your electrolyte balance, particularly in hot weather, during illness or physical activity, and in sensitive life stages such as pregnancy and childhood.
My recommendation is to choose natural mineral water for your daily fluid intake. Not only does it contain vital minerals, but it also tastes better. You don't believe me? Then I invite you to try the AWESOME TASTING, which features six different mineral and medicinal waters.
With that said: Drink water, #stayhydrated
P.S. If you've already bought distilled water, add it to your iron! 🤪

About Timo Bausch
My fascination with mineral waters began in 2016 during my training as a Water Sommelier. Since then, I have been exploring the characteristics and diversity of water. In addition to pairing water with food, wine, coffee and other beverages, I offer the creation of water menus for restaurants and hotels. Furthermore, it is also important to me to draw attention to the importance of drinking water.
