Mineral water is considered one of the purest natural products, but not all mineral water carries the organic label. For several years now, mineral water producers have had the opportunity to have their company or mineral water certified as organic. The requirements for organic mineral water go far beyond the legal requirements for conventional mineral water.
But what is the difference? And what criteria must be met to obtain an organic certification? This article answers these questions and more.
What makes organic mineral water different from conventional mineral water?
Mineral water comes from underground sources that are protected from contamination and must be officially recognised. However, even if it is considered "pure", traces of residues such as nitrate, pesticides or pharmaceutical residues can be detected.
Organic mineral water must meet much stricter requirements:
Highest purity: strict limits for contaminants that are far below the legal requirements for conventional mineral water.
Sustainable protection of the water source: Ecological measures to protect the source areas and sustainable water management.
Transparency of origin: Full traceability of the source and regular independent audits.
Climate-friendly production: Use of renewable energy and measures to reduce carbon footprint.
No chemical treatment: No chemical or physical treatment is allowed.
The following table shows the differences between organic mineral water, mineral water and tap water

What certification authorities exist for organic mineral water?
The organic label for mineral water is awarded by independent certification organisations. Among the best known are:
The Qualitätsgemeinschaft Bio-Mineralwasser e.V.: This organisation sets particularly strict criteria for the purity and sustainability of mineral water and works with accredited testing facilities.
SGS Institut Fresenius: A renowned institute that carries out extensive quality testing, including testing organic mineral water for purity and sustainability.
Which mineral waters are certified as organic?
There are a large number of mineral waters that are certified organic. Here are some of the best known:
Conclusion: Organic mineral water not only offers outstanding purity, but also a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional mineral water and tap water. Organic mineral water is the right choice for anyone who values natural quality and the responsible use of resources.

About Timo Bausch
My fascination with mineral waters began in 2016 during my training as a Water Sommelier. Since then, I have been exploring the characteristics and diversity of water. In addition to pairing water with food, wine, coffee and other beverages, I offer the creation of water menus for restaurants and hotels. Furthermore, it is also important to me to draw attention to the importance of drinking water.
