Saratoga Spring water has become famous for a variety of reasons, including Ashton Hall's morning routine. What many people don't know is that the water has been bottled in the north-eastern United States for over 150 years. Initially, it was called 'Saratoga Vichy', in tribute to the legendary French mineral springs. Incidentally, the town of Saratoga Springs became a luxurious holiday resort thanks to the spring. The total mineralisation of the still water is 42–160 mg/litre and that of the carbonated water is 46–180 mg/litre.
However, the US has several other mineral and spring waters extracted in a wide variety of locations. This article will introduce some of these in more detail.
Poland Spring is one of the best-known water brands in the USA. Its water comes from natural springs in Maine, one of the country's most water-rich states. The brand has been around since 1845. The total mineralisation of the carbonated water is stated on the website as 51 mg per litre, while the value for the still water is given as 32–76 mg per litre.
Arrowhead originates from mountain springs in California and the Rocky Mountains. These regions are renowned for their pure, low-mineral geology. The traditional label has been around since 1894 and is considered an everyday classic in the western United States. According to the website, twelve different springs are used for this brand. Like 'Southern California Springs', 'Northern California Springs' includes four sources. There are also the sources 'Colorado Spring', 'Canada Spring', 'Arrowhead Spring', and 'Coyote Spring'. However, only the analysis of Arrowhead Spring is available on the website. There is also a difference in total mineralisation between carbonated water (180 mg per litre) and non-carbonated water (26–270 mg per litre).
Liquid Death is not just any spring water. It's a rebellious brand in a can. Rather than emphasising purity and authenticity, the California-based brand has a skull design and the slogan “Murder Your Thirst”. Originally, the water was sourced from the Austrian Alps. However, transporting it all the way from Austria to the US was both unsustainable and too expensive, so Liquid Death now uses mountain spring water instead. The total mineralisation is 170 mg per litre.
Mountain Valley Spring Water has been flowing from the Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas since 1871, making it one of the USA's oldest spring waters. With a total mineralisation of 210 mg per litre, it is bottled directly at the source in green glass bottles. Over the decades, it has been served at the White House and enjoyed by celebrities such as Elvis Presley and Muhammad Ali. Today, Mountain Valley Spring Water is considered a symbol of the American water tradition: clear, mineral-balanced and with a touch of history in every bottle. You can read the full history on the website, including pictures of bottles dating back to the 1920s.
Tahoe Artesian Water originates from an underground artesian spring located near Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The water is protected from external contamination deep underground. It rises to the surface under natural pressure and is bottled directly at the source without treatment. It is characterised by its balanced mineral content (with total mineralisation of 110 mg/litre) and soft taste.
Blue Spring Living Water is a special spring water from Blount County, Alabama. The water is so clear at the source that you can see the bottom perfectly, even at a depth of 12 metres. By the time it reaches the surface, the water has already travelled for 300 years. It is bottled completely untreated. Its total mineralisation is 44 mg per litre.
Alongside the waters mentioned above, popular brands include Iceland Glacial, Evian and Voss. However, these are imported from various countries and do not come from the US.

P.S. Don't bother with Aquafina, Glaceau Smartwater, Dasani, Nestlé Pure Life, etc. These are mineral-enriched, purified tap waters.
About Timo Bausch
My fascination with mineral waters began in 2016 during my training as a Water Sommelier. Since then, I have been exploring the characteristics and diversity of water. In addition to pairing water with food, wine, coffee and other beverages, I offer the creation of water menus for restaurants and hotels. Furthermore, it is also important to me to draw attention to the importance of drinking water.
