How I became the Water Sensory Expert 2022 🏆


The 2022 annual meeting of the Water Sommelier Union took place last weekend. More than 50 Water Sommeliers from 14 nations were guests in Gräfelfingen near Munich.


While the participants enjoyed a wonderfully organized social program on Friday - including a visit to the Slyrs Distillery - the official general meeting took place on Saturday. Afterwards, the Mineral Water Enjoyment Day began with the exciting presentations by Florian Köglmeier, Gerlinde Mock and Norbert Wiederer, as well as preparations for the "Mineral Water Sensory Expert 2022" competition.


During the competition, the participants had 40 minutes each to familiarize themselves with eleven still and eleven sparkling waters and their bottlers. After a short break, four still and four sparkling waters had to be blind tasted and correctly assigned to the products of the sponsoring members, and ten theoretical questions about the sources had to be answered.


I was able to beat the other participants by a narrow margin and received the 1st place prize from Peter and Marion Schropp. Of course we celebrated my victory 🥇🍾


Congratulations to Daniela Kornberger for her 2nd place, to the re-elected board members Jens Bunzel, Marion Schropp and Peter Schropp as well as the new assessors Gerlinde Mock and Joachim Kuppert.

My fascination with mineral waters began in 2016 during my training as a Water Sommelier. Since then, I have been exploring the characteristics and diversity of water. In addition to pairing water with food, wine, coffee and other beverages, I offer the creation of water menus for restaurants and hotels.
