Baby in Dubai: What parents should keep in mind about water 🇦🇪💧

As a Water Sommelier in Dubai, people often ask me, “What kind of water should I use to prepare my baby’s formula?”

That’s completely understandable. Newborns and infants, in particular, are very sensitive when it comes to nutrition and water. Many parents use powdered formula, which requires water to prepare every day. However, not all water is automatically suitable for babies.

In this post, you’ll learn:

  • What parents should look for in water;

  • Which minerals can be problematic;

  • What limits apply in Europe; and

  • Which waters available in Dubai are suitable for the preparation of baby food

Why is it so important to choose the right water for babies?

Babies are delicate little beings who, after birth, need time to adjust to breast milk or formula. Their kidneys and metabolism are still developing. As a result, they have a limited ability to process certain minerals. Excessive amounts of certain substances, for example, can put a strain on their kidneys or cause digestive problems.

What are the limits for baby water?

In Europe, and particularly in Germany, there are clear guidelines on when water can be labelled as suitable for preparing infant formula. These are precisely defined in the German Mineral and Table Water Ordinance. Section 15 sets out the limits that must be met. Only if none of the substances exceed these limits may a mineral water bear this label.

The limits are as follows:

Limits of Minerals in Water for Baby

As well as ensuring that mineral levels are within the recommended range, you should also make sure that the water is not overly mineralised, as this can affect the composition of the infant formula. This is important because infant formula is already precisely tailored to infants' needs.

Which mineral waters available in Dubai are suitable for preparing baby food?

Unlike in Germany, where many brands specifically advertise on their bottles or websites that their mineral water is suitable for preparation of baby food, this is not always clearly indicated for many brands available in Dubai. As a result, finding suitable mineral water often requires more effort.

I have therefore done some research and found the following mineral waters that are suitable for preparing baby food. I have also listed the respective instructions from the manufacturers:

Acqua Panna (Italy 🇮🇹)

Zaku (Latvia 🇱🇻)

My recommendation

All of the mineral waters listed above are generally suitable for preparing baby food. However, I would recommend choosing mineral water in glass bottles. Glass is considered to be of a particularly high quality and to be neutral in taste. It preserves the original purity and character of mineral water well, especially during long transport routes and in high temperatures.

It is also recommended that water is always boiled before use for infants. Furthermore, I fully support the WHO’s recommendation to exclusively breastfeed infants for the first six months.

Conclusion

Selecting the appropriate water for preparing baby food is a crucial yet frequently overlooked aspect of daily life for young families. Since infants' kidneys and metabolism are still developing, the mineral content of the water plays a crucial role in ensuring their diet is gentle and safe.

While clear legal guidelines and labelling in Europe provide good guidance, selecting suitable mineral waters in Dubai can be more challenging for parents. This requires more attention and background knowledge.

As a general rule: The lower and more balanced the mineral content, the better suited the water is for feeding babies. It is also essential to ensure compliance with the limit values for certain minerals. Hygienic considerations such as boiling the water and the WHO's general recommendations should also be taken into account. Ultimately, it's not just about availability; it's also about safety, quality and trust. Parents who engage with this topic can make an informed decision and support their baby’s nutrition as best as possible by choosing water that suits their child's sensitive stage of life.

I hope this post helps parents in Dubai to make safe and informed decisions about which water to use for preparing baby food.
