Water in glass bottle or PET bottle? Which is better?
In my daily work as a Water Sommelier, I am often asked the same question: "Is water from a glass bottle better than water from a PET bottle?" There is no simple answer. Both types of packaging have their advantages and disadvantages. In this article, we will examine the most important differences in three key categories: taste and sensory experience, health, and sustainability.

Taste and Sensory properties
From a sensory perspective, glass is considered the most neutral type of packaging for natural mineral water. It is nearly completely inert and does not interact with the water. Therefore, the original character of the water, particularly its minerality, freshness, and balance, is preserved over time. Another advantage is evident with carbonated mineral waters. Glass provides a better barrier against gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide. This helps preserve carbonation for a longer period of time.
PET bottles are approved for food contact and are considered safe when used as intended. However, compared to glass, PET can react more strongly with external factors. Under certain conditions, small amounts of substances from the packaging material can migrate into the water. This can affect sensory perception, particularly in the case of sensitive waters.
One frequently studied compound is acetaldehyde, which can form during PET production and affect the taste of water at certain concentrations. Studies show that the migration of these substances depends on factors such as storage duration, temperature, and packaging conditions.
Health
In general, glass and PET bottles are considered safe for storing drinking and mineral water because they are subject to strict food safety regulations.
Many consumers prefer glass bottles because they are free of plastics and considered particularly resistant to external influences. However, this does not mean that PET bottles are harmful under normal use.
The scientific debate primarily focuses on potential material migration and microplastic particles. Studies show that external factors can affect PET bottles. For instance, a 2022 study revealed that exposure to sunlight and mechanical stress can increase the release of particles from PET bottles. High temperatures and long storage periods can also negatively affect PET bottles.
Another recent study, published in the journal Water Research, simulated realistic everyday situations, such as storage in hot vehicles and mechanical stress. The study found that heat and movement can increase the release of nano- and microplastics from PET bottles.
Proper storage is therefore crucial, especially in regions with extreme temperatures, such as Dubai. Leaving a PET bottle in a hot car or direct sunlight for hours is not comparable to a bottle that is properly stored.
Useful tip: When buying water, make sure that the PET bottles haven’t been exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time and that they have been stored in a cool place whenever possible.
Sustainability
Which is more environmentally friendly, glass or PET? There’s no simple answer to this question. Glass is often considered the more sustainable option, but its actual environmental impact depends on many factors.
Reusable glass bottles can be sustainable in an efficient return system. They have a long service life, can be refilled multiple times, and are fully recyclable. However, glass bottles are heavier, so transporting them requires more energy and results in higher emissions over long delivery routes. This is especially true for single-use glass bottles.
PET bottles, on the other hand, have advantages in terms of logistics and transportation. They are significantly lighter, require less energy to transport, and produce fewer CO₂ emissions per unit transported due to their lower weight. However, they are made of plastic and can harm the environment if not disposed of properly.
Therefore, the sustainability of packaging depends on more than just the material.

Recycling infrastructure
Production conditions, and energy consumption.
Therefore, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question, "Glass or PET?" The important thing is not just the material of the bottle, but also the entire system behind it.
Useful tip: If you prefer glass bottles, try choosing a regional mineral water in a returnable bottle whenever possible. Germany, in particular, has a wide selection of high-quality mineral waters distributed through well-functioning returnable bottle systems. Short transport distances and repeated bottle reuse can significantly improve the environmental footprint. This way, you can enjoy the sensory benefits of glass bottles while using the most sustainable packaging solution possible.
The Premium Experience
In upscale dining establishments, such as fine-dining restaurants and luxury hotels, natural mineral water is predominantly served in glass bottles.
This is not only because of the packaging itself, but also because of the experience:
High-quality table presentation
Enhanced brand perception
Association with premium quality
Optimal conditions for water tastings
Conclusion
Scientific analysis shows that both glass and PET bottles are safe options for packaging mineral water. The key differences lie in sensory properties, storage, presentation, and sustainability, not fundamental safety.
Those who value the purest taste, high-quality presentation, and long-term storage should choose glass bottles. PET bottles, on the other hand, stand out for their light weight, shatter resistance, and logistical advantages.
However, proper storage is crucial, especially in hot regions like Dubai and Abu Dhabi. A properly stored PET bottle cannot be compared to one that has been exposed to high temperatures for an extended period.
Therefore, the statement "glass is healthy and PET is bad" is not scientifically accurate. The reality is more complex: Glass offers sensory advantages, while PET offers practical ones. The decisive factors are the quality of the water, the packaging system, and how the product is handled.
